Tibetan is a language spoken by approximately 6 million people across the Tibetan Plateau. It belongs to the Tibeto-Burman group, which itself belongs to the Sino-Tibetan (or Sino-Thai) family. Spoken Tibetan includes dozens of regional dialects and sub-dialects which, in many cases, are not mutually intelligible. The classical written form is a major regional literary language, particularly in use in Buddhist literature. Tibetan is written with an Indic script, but this Freelang dictionary uses a romanized transcription.
